Crop insurance sales in Iowa are normally focused around the spring sales closing date. Scott Arnold, Marketing Manager for the Midwest Division of Rain and Hail L.L.C., suggests, "with dry conditions last spring and again late this summer, growers may want to consider forage production coverage with a sales closing date of September 30th."
One important change in the forage production policy for 2001 is the elimination of the spring sales closing date. As a result, new forage production policies or changes to existing policies must be completed by September 30th. Forage production also has new crop provisions for 2001, which include the availability of optional units. Other changes have been made to comply with mandates within the Agricultural Risk Protection Act of 2000.
Arnold encourages growers to contact their Rain and Hail agent for further information on the forage production program and changes mandated by the Act. Specifically, the increased premium assistance under the Act may allow growers to increase their coverage for about the same out-of-pocket expense. A listing of Rain and Hail agents is available on the Rain and Hail website, www.rainhail.com, under "Find an Agent."
